“In the special darkness of the northern winter, when life contracts into small pools of candlelight, beyond which shadows cloak and flicker mysteriously, the mind probes the darker side of nature. The creatures of the underworld in Nordic mythology are always nocturnal. By candlelight, the powers of sight weaken, the ear becomes hypersensitive, and the air stands ready to vibrate with the slightest tremor of a strange legend or celestial music."
